A stellar cast gathers for the the opening night of Outspoken, bringing to life the cultural capital of our area. Set in the evocative rural setting of the Corbridge Barn in Wanaka, this evening presents you with the most exciting mix of acclaimed and new voices. Expect captivating stories and talents from our neck of the woods: the spellbinding words of Brian Turner and Owen Marshall, ghosts and gold from Peter Duncan, memoryscapes from Jeromy van Riel and a word-turn from Flat Out Productions. Other guests include Laura Williamson, Annabel Wilson (runner-up in this year's regional heat of the NZ National Poetry Slam) and students from Mount Aspiring College, all corralled and compered by raconteur Gary Mc Cormick.

Acclaimed poet Brian Turner takes you on a journey through his South, in the outdoor setting of the new BG Artspace. 

An unashamedly regionalist Otago poet, Brian Turner is one of NZ’s most significant writers on landscape, environmentalism and sport. A former professional hockey playerand all-round outdoorsman, he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Poetry in 2009. His work is deeply rooted in the land: 'Only the mountains know / where they have come from / and where they are going / and what will happen when we are gone.'

Bring your picnic blankets, low chairs and sun hats for an entertaining afternoon. We're happy to arrange higher seating for those who need it. If the weather gods don't play the game, our plan B venue is the A class Beanie Cafe!

Tonight, Gary McCormick is your man! Join him the love grotto as he celebrates the fun aspects of everyday life and the Kiwi experience, taking questions from the floor. He considers himself an expert on love and relationships and invites the audience to test him. This will be a Valentine’s date like no other!

McCormick embarked on his first poetry tour after his 1976 collection Naked and Nameless won a Pen Poetry Award. With six more collections of poetry and the satiric book Honey, I Blew up the Atoll under his belt, he went on to become one of New Zealand's most iconic entertainers, both through TV and radio, touring with Sam Hunt, Tim Shadbolt, Hello Sailor, Tom Scott and the late David Lange.
